Probably the most beautiful (definitely the most romantic) festival in Thailand. Celebrated every year some time around late October/November always on the full moon. People gather to the banks of the rivers to thank the goddess of water by floating “krathongs”: elaborated flower and banana leaves compositions assembled on a piece of banana tree trunks. Northen Thailand, especially Chiang Mai, is known for “Khom Loys” — sky lanterns (paper balloons filled with hot air). These are believed to help get rid of troubles and bad luck, and honor the Buddha. You don’t want to find one of those in your garden: all the troubles of someone else has landed at your house! And of course, fireworks….another necessary ingredient of Loy Krathong.
